About

About the School

Our School is recognised for the high quality of its teaching and research. Our dynamic team of academic staff are widely published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds.

We provide cross-disciplinary teaching and learning activities, so that students are offered a variety of learning experiences in collaboration between the disciplines and with other schools across the university. The research community hosts a vibrant and enthusiastic cohort of research students.

Welcome

Welcome to the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry.

Our mission is to work across and within our disciplinary boundaries to consider and explore how human beings have ordered and made sense of their world throughout history, from ancient times through to the present, and how this informs our futures. The disciplinary groupings of Classics and Ancient History, Studies in Religion, Philosophy and History are united by this common intellectual quest, and are mutually reinforced and supported by their distinct approaches, perspectives and methodologies.

Our School possesses a strong a research culture, with all of our disciplines ranked at “Above World Standard” in the 2015 Excellence in Research Assessment exercise. We have particular research strengths in Australian Cultural and Social History; European Philosophy and Ethics; Governance and Ideology in International History; Late Antiquity; Logic and the Philosophy of Science; Religion and Culture; and Social and Cultural History of the Greco-Roman World. We have researchers of national and international renown, and a lively and well-supported Research Higher Degree community.

We are also very proud of and deeply committed to our teaching. Our undergraduate programmes in Ancient History, Classical Languages, Studies in Religion, Philosophy and History are highly regarded by our students, and are supported by skilled and dedicated staff, some of whom have won prestigious awards for their teaching.

Staff in the School are closely connected with local, national and international communities. Our staff serve on expert advisory panels, support school programmes, advise governments, host international conferences, hold international fellowships, appear frequently in the media, deliver public lectures, and publish extensively and widely. We also host numerous visitors, most notably through the RD Milns Antiquities museum.
