The words in the title are taken from a hymn that captures the goal of Christian education from the perspective of John and Charles Wesley. Christian theology requires embodiment in the life of the church and the community and the role of research in understanding the interrelationship between ‘knowledge’ and ‘vital piety’ is critical if we are to guide students in the task of implementing effective ministry in today’s multicultural and multi-faith environment. Theological research is crucial to this endeavour because it provides the foundation for both teaching in the confessional academy and practice in the local church. As college lecturers are themselves enriched by such work, it will help to inspire the kind of teaching that stimulates in students a hunger for engagement in critical theological reflection. This will enhance their ability to develop transformative and culturally-appropriate practices for church worship and mission that serves this present age.
